English

English studies is an academic area that focuses on the power, beauty, and endless diversity of human language and literature. This area of study appeals to students who want to study well-crafted literary, expository, and analytical texts, including film, and who want to improve their ability to create such texts as well.

What makes the program unique?

◆ A dynamic Creative Writing Series that has brought such noted authors as Ted Kooser, former U.S. Poet Laureate, and William Kloefkorn, Nebraska State Poet, to campus to give readings.
◆ An established record of students who have gone on to be successful at some of the nation’s top graduate schools in areas such as literary studies, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, journalism, mass communications, and law.
◆ Availability of a variety of minors outside of English to allow students to develop a scope of knowledge that will improve their employment prospects, including Theatre, Journalism, and Creative Writing.
◆ Opportunities to oversee, write for, and help publish the school’s newspaper,The Peru State Times, a student publication that has earned multiple awards.

Instructional format permitting students personal and extended contact with faculty and individualized guidance throughout all coursework.

◆ Faculty who are excellent teachers, as well as active scholars, and who have published widely in such diverse areas as science fiction, Native American studies, Irish studies, Caribbean literature, and various genres of creative writing.

Facilities

The English department is housed in the Jindra Fine Arts building. This building includes classrooms and faculty offices for the department, in addition to the music department and the Benford Recital Hall.
